Anyone been there? I'm going on business from October 12-19 and need advice. Most of the time I'll be staying on the company dime in the Hyatt near the convention center, but I'll have about two days on my own dime. I need advice on:
- Someplace to stay that is clean, safe, convenient, comfortable, and ideally, inexpensive and interesting. Need not be fancy.
- Not-to-be-missed places to eat
- Not-to-be-missed places to shop
- Not-to-be-missed activities and sights
- Places for excellent bespoke tailoring (I have some leads but always appreciate personal insight)
Any other general advice about Taiwan and Taipei in particularly. This is going to be so much fun.

Hey, remember that thing where Shana and I break up and go our separate ways?
Just kidding!
Yeah, instead of that, we're going to do the exact opposite. That seemed like a better plan.

If you could write like one fiction author, who would it be?

Jane Austen or Ayn Rand. Very different writers, but both masters of subtext and subtlety in their respective subject matter. Their essentialized style of writing is often mistaken for one-dimensionality, but these were authors who could devastate with deeply layered-meaning.
Who taught you how to ride a bike?
I taught myself. My dad bought me a bike when I was about five, and I practiced coasting down a small hill on it--for some reason, that was easy for me. I did this over and over until, instinctively, I just started peddling.
Last Friday, Shana and I had dinner at L'Atelier in Boulder, CO for my birthday. L'Atelier is owned by Radek Cerny, a local chef and fixture in the Denver/Boulder restaurant scene. He used to operate my favorite restaurant in Denver--Radex--until he shut that and his other restaurants down to take a sabbatical.
If L'Atelier is the result, then thank god for sabbaticals.
I've become fond of saying, in regard to design and fashion, that it is important for a thing to look good for the same reason that it is important for food to taste good. L'Atelier really proves this point. Radek positively envelopes you in cuisine for a couple of hours. Every aspect of the dining experience is controlled, the service is relaxed but impecable, and nothing distracts from the food. The result is exquisite nourishment for the body and the soul.
We ordered the ten-course "Menu Degustation" which was perfectly timed and portioned. (The photos were taken without flash--thus the low quality, and I forgot to take dinner of dessert--profiteroles with chocolate foam, vanilla sauce, and rasberry sauce).
Have you ever met any celebrities? Any interesting stories?

No, but I saw Roger Clemens in Las Vegas last week. See, here's the back of his head:
Our trip to Steamboat last weekend was great. I'm posting some stuff about it on Snow Hugger.
