The Environmentalism Religion
I think this idea of scarcity of natural resources, real and
imagined, has been created by the acceptance of a bad philosophy:
altruism/Christianity -- and the bad decision that have resulted from
it.
The primary ethical rule of Christianity is altruism. By altruism I mean the following.
I see our culture's desire to sacrifice values to our enemies all over the world, the "environment," and
whatever else someone can dream up, as a continuation of the
Christianity/altruism philosophy that has been causing the West to
trade value for non-value for 2000 years. Jimmy Carter's surrendered
US owned oil fields in the Middle East. We have allowed the terrorists
of oil funded nations to attack our country for years since. Our
response to 9/11 is a more a humanitarian mission than a war. Out of a
moral paralysis caused by altruism we refuse to defend ourselves and
take on the real enemy: Iran--while they become more and more
emboldened by our lack of action. Our federal government bleeds
productive individuals for billions of dollars in taxes that are then
given as aid to other nations even while we are on the brink of another
recession having not fully recovered from the last one. These are a
few examples of altruistic self-sacrifice at work in our culture, there
are hundreds more. Our country and our culture has swallowed the idea
that it is evil to be productive, strong, wealthy and happy--all of
which are selfish endeavors. We believe that as penance for these
"vices" we need to take unselfish acts by sacrificing our values to
those who are unproductive, weak, poor, and miserable. As a nation, we
do just that.
Many people in our country have rejected religion's claim that there are gods and demons at work, because there is no evidence of such things. These same people then accept the morality of religion. They reject the idea of gods due to lack of evidence and then accept the "word of god" (altruism) accompanied by the same lack of evidence.
Without a god to lay down sacrifices to, the proponents of altruism are left with a vacuum where religion used to be. Something had to take the place of God. Sacrifice to a nothing was just too unpalatable. Along came the pseudo-science Environmentalism to fill that hole. People were presented a new god to sacrifice values to, one that wasn't all about ghosts and demons but about "science" and "nature." They had their religion without that negative association to Christianity and its bloody, mystical history. Environmentalism is the new religion of our time. Just like Christianity it's ideology has worked its way into many aspects of our lives. It has rapidly gained such popularity because it is so similar in principle to all other religions. At root it holds that man is guilty by nature (by being productive) and must bow his head and sacrifice values to counterbalance his transgressions against God/Mother Earth. The crucifix on the wall and the Bible on the nightstand have been supplanted by the recycling bin under the sink and the hybrid in the garage. Environmentalism wants us to feel guilty for driving cars and doing anything else that is for human life -- to feel guilty for being human beings and not low animals. Religion already did the ground work for the environmental movement, they didn't have to create the idea of original sin they just had to repackage it.
